I won't go into why I've never seen one of the most iconic film franchises in existence (truth is, I'm not sure - unlike most people, I managed never to see it as a child and, in young adulthood, found peoples' surprise at this fact, and insistence that I must, tiresome. I think I purposely avoided all things Star Wars on principle). But, having finally relented due to my new found interest in science fiction, I found that I was unimpressed.
Perhaps I'm just missing something (I have no fond childhood memories of it, no real idea of what will happen in the other films), but the story itself seemed to lack any real depth. I also didn't find any of the characters particularly engaging. Even my husband - a lifelong SW fan - admitted that after watching so much Star Trek lately, his beloved Episode IV was, well, a bit rubbish by comparison.
That said, I'm prepared to give it a second chance (I wasn't, after all, blown away by my first ST experience, either). The Empire Strikes Back is next and is, I'm assured, a better movie. We shall see. For the moment, however, it's most definitely Star Trek 1, Star Wars 0.

Quite why Amazon couldn't deliver it until Saturday remains a mystery but, having now watched all three seasons TOS and the first six movies, I found that I couldn't wait until the weekend for my sci-fi fix (and, frankly, the first season of Battlestar Galactica we've begun watching as a Star Trek substitute just isn't cutting it). So Tuesday night became (yet another) Star Trek night.
It was my third viewing of the movie and, somewhat surprisingly, the one I've enjoyed the most. Now that I've 'caught up' and know so much more about the characters and the Star Trek universe in general - not to mention my fondness for those characters as portrayed by Nimoy, Shatner et al - I was convinced that I'd be disappointed by rewatching the new versions. Instead, I found that I was pleasantly surprised; that my background knowledge made the differences all the more enjoyable to watch. The characters made so much more sense to me - I think that I could even learn to like them just as much (well, almost as much) as their 'original' counterparts.
I've watched the previous movies recently and, although I loved them, it was sad to witness the ageing; the end of these characters I've come to love. It's wonderful discovering a fandom that offers such a vast back catalogue to explore, but in a way saddening to know you've already missed out on so much. It is, therefore, genuinely exciting to see these characters reborn in a new film - a new universe - and to know that there exists a whole new world of possibilities for them - and you! (And not just in fan fiction - even though those stories are generally more satisfying!). There are undoubtedly flaws in the new 'verse - McCoy seemed thinly drawn, Scotty was little more than a caricature and Spock is a little too expressive - however, in my current throes of fandom, I'm willing to forgive them all. Just so long as there is more ST out there to look forward to!
It seems so strange to me now that my first viewing of the film was approached with little enthusiasm, as someone with almost no knowledge of Star Trek at all. My husband had insisted we see it at a packed IMAX theatre in its opening weekend, and I'd mocked him for getting excited about the release. "Just you wait," he'd said at the time. "You'll be writing Kirk/Spock slash within a week."
He was, of course, wrong. I was only reading it within the week. The writing didn't come until months later.

Fic update: I have almost finished writing a short but decidedly smutty companion piece to 'Lagniappe' and 'Hangover'. I will make every attempt to post it this weekend! :)
- Location:The couch
- Mood:
In pain
Author: louisestrange
Fandom: Star Trek XI
Pairing: Kirk/Spock...kind of. Mention of Spock/Uhura.
Rating: PG-13.
Word Count: 4,000.
Summary: Companion piece to my very short story ‘Lagniappe’ – this is an extended version of events from Spock’s POV. Spock doesn’t know what Kirk means by ‘friends with benefits’.
Warning: Alcohol/chocolate consumption, if that counts. Otherwise, none.
Disclaimer: Surprisingly, I do not own Star Trek.
Notes: This took longer and proved far more difficult to write than I’d initially anticipated. Spock is indeed a tricky character to write and this piece did not turn out at all as I’d hoped it would, but - as I’d previously promised it – I decided to post it anyway. Huge thanks to the wonderful
darstellen for beta reading the incredibly rough first draft and for her words of encouragement. Please know, however, that all mistakes (and instances of bad writing) are entirely my own! The companion piece to this can be found here.
Hangover
–noun (hang-o-ver)
1. The disagreeable physical after-effects of drunkenness, such as a headache, usually felt several hours after cessation of drinking alcohol.
2. Any aftermath of or lingering effect from an emotional experience.
I am, once again, struggling to write what is, at best, mediocre PWP fanfiction. What was supposed to be a short, humorous companion piece to 'Lagniappe' from Spock's POV has grown to more than double it's intended length and has sprouted angsty little arms and legs.
I seem completely unable to be make any point succinctly and my sense of humour has all but deserted me. I feel the LOL-ing Kirk and Spock in my icon are mocking me as I write this...
I am thoroughly frustrated and taking a break to make paella for dinner.
That is all.

Title: Lagniappe
Author: louisestrange
Fandom: Star Trek XI
Pairing: None, really. Kirk/Spock pre-slash. Mention of Spock/Uhura.
Rating: PG-13.
Word Count: Just 1,300. Short and – hopefully! – sweet.
Summary: Apparently, Spock doesn’t know what Kirk means by ‘friends with benefits’.
Warning: Alcohol consumption, if that counts. Otherwise, none.
Disclaimer: I do not own Star Trek.
Notes: My first attempt at Star Trek fic, this is a little piece of nonsense (partially inspired by Sheldon from TBBT) and was salvaged from the wreckage of an unsuccessful attempt at a longer, more meaningful story. Comments would be wonderful! Many thanks to
darstellen for, as well as beta reading, generally being lovely and building my confidence!
Lagniappe
- noun [lan-yap]
1. An extra or unexpected gift or benefit.
2. Something given or obtained as a gratuity or bonus

At present, I am wholly submerged in the Star Trek (specifically Kirk/Spock)-verse to the exclusion of all my previous fandoms. It all [slash] started with that pairing and I think I most fangirls end up there eventually. I think I always knew I would - the new movie just made it that bit easier.
As well as reading numerous fics in this fandom, I'm working my way through the series' (and movies) in order. I'm currently near the end of TOS, Season 2 and since I have a LOT more to see and anticipate enjoying this particular fandom for quite a while to come, this journal will become my place to comment on anything ST related and possibly post my own fic if I ever get around to writing any. Which is doubtful at present, but you never know.
Anyway, this rather dull post serves to draw a line under my BBM fic and related posts and clear the way for me to boldly go....yeah, you know the rest *groans*

Disclaimer: Annie Proulx started it and she's the one reaping the financial rewards. I just do this for fun, or something like it.
Rating: PG-13
Author’s Note: Kind of movie/book canon – this fic had absolutely NOTHING to do with my previous BBM fic, ‘Go Fish’.
Sorry that it’s taken me so long to post the first chapter after the prologue – I wrote two chapters and then had a crisis of confidence and changed my mind about how I wanted the story to go, so I took a break, started on a Go Fish sequel, then came back and started over with this one. Going forward the story will alternate between Ennis and Bobby’s POV- and be warned, this one’s a slow burner.
Feedback: Never enough feedback, never enough.
Bitter & Twisted – Chapter One: Black Coffee Blues.
Ennis Del Mar woke at his usual time, always five-thirty or damn close, on a working day or not. The wind rattled grit and dust against the trailer’s tinny frame and he groaned at the prospect of another day before climbing out of his narrow bed and walking blind to the little bathroom in the far corner, hand already on his dick, aiming at the toilet and, by the sound of things, just missing the mark as he let go.

Subject: 1990 - No one in the world for the old Lightning Flat ranch to go to when John Twist dies except the grandson he never met. Although it seems that Bobby Twist may have more than that one reason for wanting to go to Wyoming... A short teaser of a prologue for my upcoming multi-part fic about Bobby Twist & his quest to find out more about the life of the father he never really knew. Chapter One should be posted within the week.

I've also been bitten by another plot bunny and am keen to get started on a new BBM fic - I think this time I could use a beta reader, so if you care to volunteer, please get in touch. Patience will be required, as I really have no idea how the whole beta/author relationship works but I'm keen to learn :)
Just a little heads-up for those who are interested...
